Hospice Eligibility

Fewer than half of all Americans eligible for hospice actually receive it. Those who do access the hospice benefit often only use it for days or weeks. We frequently hear from families we have served that they wish they had known about hospice sooner. We want to help change that.

Who is eligible?

Medicare defines a patient as hospice-eligible if the patient's attending physician and the hospice Medical Director certify that, in their clinical judgment, the patient's prognosis predicts a life expectancy of six months or less if the terminal illness runs its normal course. Though hospice eligibility is not determined by diagnosis, this tool will help you determine common eligibility triggers for the most frequent hospice diagnoses. Of course, a physician's clinical judgment is paramount and some patients may not meet all guidelines.
